What actually decides it
Formatting and rewriting are not the same thing
AudioPen takes what you said and produces something better organised than what you said. That is the product, and for capturing a half-formed idea it is the right behavior. Flit deliberately does not do this: it fixes punctuation, capitals, spoken numbers and filler, and leaves your words alone. In a clinical note, a legal memo or a code comment, a tool that improves your phrasing is a tool that has changed the record.
A window you go to, or no window at all
Every dictation in AudioPen happens inside AudioPen, and the text comes out when you copy it. Flit has no window to switch to: the app you are already in is the app the text appears in, about 0.7 seconds after you release the key. That difference decides which one fits your day far more than any feature row.
Owning both is a reasonable answer
They overlap barely at all. AudioPen on a phone for thinking out loud on a walk, Flit on the Mac for the 200 small typing jobs a working day contains. We would rather say that than pretend one replaces the other.

Are Flit and AudioPen really competitors?
Not really. AudioPen is a place you go to record and get a rewritten note back. Flit types finished text into whatever app you are already in. People arrive at both from the phrase "voice to text", which is the only reason this page exists.
Can Flit turn a rambling brain dump into a summary?
No, and it is a deliberate refusal. Flit formats: punctuation, capitals, spoken numbers, filler removed. It does not condense, restructure or improve your phrasing. If you want the ramble turned into something tidier, AudioPen is built for exactly that.
Does AudioPen run on my Mac or in the cloud?
Their site does not state it, so neither will we. Flit runs entirely on your Mac and you can verify that with a network monitor.
